What the test can and cannot tell you

Negative result
Strongly reassuring in the study group, but not a guarantee. About 8% of cancers in the NHS study were not detected, and detection is lower for low-grade tumours. Your doctor may still recommend further tests depending on your symptoms.
Positive result
Cancer-related DNA changes were found. Not everyone with a positive result has cancer, so you will need further investigation, usually cystoscopy, to find out what is going on.
Not a screening test
The evidence comes from people with symptoms. The test has not been validated for people without symptoms.
Other causes
GALEAS Bladder looks only for bladder cancer. Infection, stones and kidney conditions need separate assessment.
False positives

Why a positive result needs confirming

In the manufacturer's validation the test's specificity was 86%. That means if 100 people without bladder cancer took the test, about 14 would get a positive result.

No cancer, negative result (86)No cancer, positive result (14)

A positive result is a reason for further tests, not a diagnosis. Your doctor will talk you through it.
