Urine collects cells shed from the lining of the bladder. When a tumour is present, some of those cells carry somatic mutations, changes in DNA acquired by the cancer rather than inherited.
The laboratory extracts DNA from the cell pellet in your sample and uses next-generation sequencing to read targeted regions of 23 genes. Software then checks for more than 450 mutations known to occur in bladder cancer.
Because the panel targets mutations found in the large majority of bladder cancers, the result is reported simply as positive or negative, which your doctor then interprets alongside your symptoms.
GALEAS Bladder was validated in people investigated for haematuria, visible or found on a dipstick. The published figures apply to this group.
Some people want an earlier picture while they wait. A private result does not replace your NHS referral, so keep that appointment.
Some people find cystoscopy hard to face. Talk to us about whether a urine test is a sensible first step for you.
£849 includes your consultation, the test, shipping and follow-up.
